Federal Way

Federal Way is a bedroom community located between Seattle and Tacoma. It boasts over 8 miles of Puget Sound waterfront and is bordered by Des Moines on the north, Kent, Auburn, unincorporated King County, and Milton on the east and Tacoma and Fife on the south. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 83,259. The population estimates for 2005 are 85,800 making it Washington’s 7th largest city. Despite sharing a border with Tacoma, Federal Way is usually considered part of the Seattle metropolitan area rather than a suburb of Tacoma. It is strategically located as a major Puget Sound growth center, home to prominent regional, national, and international businesses. Headquarters for Fortune 500 corporations, such as timber giant Weyerhaeuser and internationally known World Vision, are located in Federal Way. Other successes include T.O.T.E. (Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc.) and Six Flags. Safeco is located in Quadrant’s East Campus along with Tesoro Petroleum. Federal Way is also home to St. Francis Hospital, which was named one of the top 100 hospitals in America.

Federal Way is located just 20 minutes from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The ports of Seattle and Tacoma, with excellent container ship, railroad, and trucking facilities nearby. The city is located at a key transportation hub on Interstate 5, with fast, easy freeway access. I-5 and State Highways 99, 161, and 509 provide north/south transit options: State Highway 18 offers direct access to the state’s main east-west corridor, Interstate 90.

Schools

Federal Way is proud of its educational opportunities. The Federal Way Public Schools are known for their leadership in public education through innovative programs such as their Marketing Academy and the Internet Academy, an innovative distance-learning program providing individualized instruction for elementary and secondary students over the internet.

Highline Community College offers off-campus programs in Federal Way, with their main campus just 5 miles away.

In addition, within a 30 mile radius reside Green River Community College, Renton Technical College, Tacoma Community College, Bates Technical College, Clover Park Technical College, University of Puget Sound, Pacific Lutheran University, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, and the University of Washington, just to name a few!

Recreation

Federal Way offers many opportunities for recreation with it's 8 miles of Puget Sound coastline and many acres of parks and open space, including the new Celebration Park with a nature preserve and tournament quality baseball and soccer fields.

Federal Way offers many opportunities to enjoy the great Pacific Northwest. Whether it's summer water skiing in Puget Sound or winter snow skiing at Crystal Mountain, Federal Way and the legendary Pacific Northwest offer great recreational opportunities throughout the year. With it's great central location, Federal Way is within a short drive to all the major attractions in the Puget Sound region.

Don't forget the urban attractions! Federal Way is host to great family fun at Wild Waves / Enchanted Village. And when you're ready for a slower pace, enjoy some beachcombing along the beach at Dash Point State Park, a walk along the boardwalk trail at West Hylebos Wetlands, or take in the breath-taking beauty of the Rhododendron Botanical Garden. In the greater Seattle/Tacoma area, take in attractions such as the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma.
